A multi-sensory experience of space, shape, and sound, this exhibition presents sound sculptures by Wolfgang Gil in the context of abstract art from the Museum’s collection. Gil’s installations explore the sculptural quality of sound, inviting us to contemplate listening as a phenomenon. They create opportunities for experiencing external space as well as our internal perceptual processes. A Venezuelan-born American artist who lives and works in Newark, Gil employs sound as a malleable material with curves, edges, and changing geometries—a medium that can be stretched in all dimensions.

To explore the idea of sound in visual terms Gil partnered with the Museum’s curatorial team to select works from the collection to install with his sonic sculptures. Along with three of Gil's sound sculptures Sonic Geometries features paintings and works on paper by Sam Gilliam, Donald Judd, Victor Davson, and Richard Anuszckiewicz, and a large-scale sculpture by Sol LeWitt.
